The Future is Green

TreeHugger.com wants to make saving the planet sexy. Or at least make it a high-design, savvy, chic, hip, and profitable endeavor. TreeHugger is a new online guide to the best eco-friendly gadgets, toys, food, fashion, furniture, and even travel. The self-described “modern yet green lifestyle filter” rounds up cool recycled and found objects, as well as products made of sustainable materials. People will make environmentally responsible buying decisions if it’s easy to access aesthetically pleasing products and services, or so believes Graham Hill, a New York-based designer and TreeHugger founder.

Updated daily, the TreeHugger site promotes timeless design, selling products that are multi-functional, biodegradable, repairable, durable, efficient, and always beautiful. It even sells second-hand stuff and endorses several “product service systems” that allow vendors to sell the use or service of an item without consumers having to own it. You can check out tools, cars, and sports equipment from various lending libraries. By sharing stuff, Hill believes, we use fewer materials, consume less energy, and leave less waste behind. The website, penned by far-flung correspondents, is also a fun read and a great resource of novel and quirky green activities all over the world.
