Yoga – Oxygen 101


The essence of yoga is the breath, which can cleanse and detoxify us on physical, mental and soul levels. Breathing supplies our bodies and organs with oxygen, purifies the bloodstream and helps remove waste products and toxins from the body. It also helps to keep us in the present moment, reducing stress, depression and anxiety.

Although we innately know how to breathe, our breathing often becomes habitually restricted, diminishing our lung capacities and laying a foundation for illness.

When we breathe shallowly we don’t take in sufficient oxygen or eliminate sufficient carbon dioxide. In turn, our cells become oxygen starved and toxic build-up may occur.

Yoga teaches us to breathe more slowly and deeply. By connecting with the breath through awareness and observation, infinite benefits and discoveries await: calmness, clarity, more energy, less stress, better sleep and vitality, enhanced immunity and expanded consciousness.
