Priming Your Body for Healing
One of my mentors has said, “Whoever controls your nervous system, controls your thoughts.” In this time of uncertainty, it is imperative that we take control of our own thoughts and avoid being brainwashed by the news, social media, and psychological tactics meant to elicit fear.
The media is able to hijack our thoughts by stimulating our limbic brain, specifically our amygdala, which governs our stress response to emotions such as worry, fear, and anxiety. We make knee jerk reactions when we think from this part of our brain. Emotions will often govern how our nervous system and thus how our body responds.
Where you send blood flow is where you send function. Therefore, we want to shift blood flow away from the amygdala to the pre-frontal cortex. Activation of the pre-frontal cortex allows us to elevate our awareness, consciousness, and think for ourselves! We can shift blood flow to our pre-frontal cortex by stimulating something called our parasympathetic nervous system. When you are in a parasympathetic state you are often calm, relaxed, and happy. This is the state in which your body is able to heal. If you are in a state of stress or fear you will never be able to completely heal.
