The Patio Farmer Provides Advice for Spring Planting

This month is the time to plant for spring and Erin Hostetler, owner of The Patio Farmer, can provide either at-home in-person or virtual consultations to talk through plans for anyone’s growing space or home garden. An at-home visit includes touring one’s area to provide advice on the best placement of plants along with on issues that are most helpful including best practices for plant care, constructing new spaces, one’s planting goals for the year and more.

“March is a beautiful month to grow an early round of cold-hardy vegetables, herbs and fruit like carrots, lettuce, spinach, kale, snap peas, cilantro, strawberries and more,” enthuses Hostetler. “These crops don’t need to be covered if we get a frost, which is still likely through April.

Hostetler obtained her “bread-and-butter” farm education while working on a 20-acre Certified Organic production farm in northwestern Pennsylvania. She has worked on an urban farm in central London, an organic farm in eastern Iceland and several local farms in Charlotte and Concord. For two seasons, she was the farm manager at the Urban Farm at Garinger High School (then managed by Friendship Trays, Charlotte’s Meals on Wheels program) in east Charlotte. Her desire is that more people understand where food comes from so they may be better global citizens, more connected with the Earth and their communities.
