Charlotte Area Daniel Smith on the Health Impacts of Indoor Air Pollution

May 01, 2025 06:11PM ● By Daniel Smith

Indoor air pollution is a growing concern in homes and workplaces across the country. While many people associate pollution with outdoor smog and industrial emissions, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has found that indoor air can contain two to five times more pollutants than outdoor air due to a combination of household products, building materials and inadequate ventilation.

One of the most common contributors are volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted by cleaning supplies, paint, air fresheners and certain furniture. These chemicals can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, and prolonged exposure may contribute to respiratory issues and other chronic health conditions.

Combustion sources such as gas stoves, fireplaces and tobacco smoke are also major contributors. They release harmful pollutants including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter which can aggravate asthma, increase the risk of heart disease and impair lung function. Mold and mildew present additional concerns, especially in damp or poorly ventilated areas such as basements and bathrooms. Exposure to mold spores can trigger allergic reactions and worsen asthma symptoms. Even everyday activities such as cooking, burning candles or using personal care products can release pollutants into the air.

Experts emphasize the importance of proper ventilation, use of exhaust fans and regular maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to reduce indoor air contamination. Choosing low-VOC products and using air purifiers with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters can also improve air quality. With the EPA citing that Americans spending nearly 90 percent of their time indoors, addressing indoor air pollution is essential for maintaining long-term health.
