Jason Scianno, MSW, LCSW, LCAS, on Men's Health: Beyond Stigma, Back to Self

Men’s health is about connection—mind, body, and self. It’s not just about checking your blood pressure or hitting the gym. It’s about being in relationship with yourself—your thoughts, your physical sensations, your emotions. And yet, most men I work with have spent a lifetime trained out of that connection. Taught to power through, keep quiet, stay tough. And then wonder why they’re anxious, exhausted, disconnected, or angry.
But health isn’t just the absence of disease. It’s presence. Awareness. Alignment. When men begin to slow down enough to notice how they feel—both physically and mentally—real change starts to happen. We start with simple questions: What’s your body telling you right now? Where are you holding tension? What thoughts keep looping? What are you avoiding feeling?
We work from the inside out. We use tools like neurofeedback to support the brain in finding its natural rhythm, and we combine that with body-based approaches like breathwork, grounding, somatic mindfulness, and practical coaching. Men learn how to track their internal states and build new patterns—ones based in clarity, calm, and confidence.
We also teach emotional intelligence, nervous system regulation, and core skills that often weren’t modeled growing up. We talk boundaries. Shame. Anger. Guilt. We explore how these live in the body and how to shift them. We bring in tools from DBT, ACT, and mindfulness traditions—not as therapy-speak, but as lived practices. Stuff that works.
The truth is that men feel deeply. But many haven’t had a safe space to explore that. In session, we normalize it. We reclaim it. And we practice it—because just like building muscle, connection to self takes reps. Whether it’s through walking meditations, journaling, stretching, or simply sitting with what’s true for two full minutes, it’s all part of healing.
Men who embrace this work start sleeping better. Their digestion improves. Their energy shifts. They start showing up differently in their relationships. Why? Because the mind and body aren’t separate systems. They speak to each other constantly. Mental health is physical health. And ignoring one impacts the other.
Let’s reconnect to what’s already inside you.
