Dealing with Mold Safely

Mold can grow within 24 hours, so when homeowners experience storm damage or find a water leak after returning home from vacation, it is imperative to have professional mold inspection and remediation to make repairs. Insurance companies generally cover mold only when it occurs within 14 days of a covered incident. Beyond that, it can be considered neglect and disallowed.
Qualified inspectors have the tools and knowledge to identify mold while remediation companies typically do not. Both can work together, covered by insurance. Unaddressed mold from insurance-covered incidents may well become a health issue for occupants over time, so it is important to catch mold early. Health risks associated with mold exposure include respiratory issues, allergies, coughing, sneezing, rashes and eye irritation. Those with asthma or weakened immune systems are especially at risk.
Mold remediation involves identifying, removing and cleaning mold from indoor areas to maintain a healthy environment. Mold often appears in damp spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens and basements in black, green, white or orange hues, accompanied by a musty odor. Common signs include discolored walls or ceilings and persistent smells. Mold growth typically results from excess moisture caused by roof or pipe leaks, poor ventilation or high humidity, so addressing the source of moisture is key to effective prevention.
The remediation process includes assessment when a professional evaluates the mold’s extent and its moisture source. Containment barriers are used to prevent mold spores from spreading. Mold is removed using specialized tools and cleaning solutions. Affected areas are cleaned and disinfected to remove remaining spores. Damaged materials including drywall may be replaced.
Preventive measures include keeping humidity below 60 percent with dehumidifiers or air conditioning; ensuring proper ventilation in moisture-prone areas; promptly fixing leaks; and regularly cleaning and drying damp-prone areas.
Mold remediation is vital for safeguarding both health and property. Understanding its causes and proper treatment methods helps prevent recurrence. Professional remediation ensures mold is removed safely and thoroughly.
