Food as Medicine in the Fall Season of Metal

In the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the seasons relate to the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood. The fall season corresponds to the metal element, which governs the lungs and large intestine. These organs are responsible for respiration, immunity and elimination; processes that help us take in what we need and release what we do not.
This energy of letting go can be seen in nature when the leaves fall off the trees to prepare for a cycle of renewal. The metal element encourages us to cultivate clarity, breathe in new inspiration and to let go of that which no longer serves us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. By aligning diet with the metal element, individuals can strengthen immunity, support healthy elimination and move through the fall season with resilience and balance.
Dryness often increases during the fall season, which can weaken the lungs and make the body more susceptible to coughs, colds and skin irritation. To support the metal element, TCM emphasizes eating foods that moisten, protect and strengthen the respiratory and digestive systems.
Seasonal fruits such as pears, apples and persimmons are excellent for replenishing fluids and soothing dryness. White-colored foods including daikon radish, turnips, cauliflower, onions and garlic are also associated with metal to benefit lung function and increase immunity.
To ensure balance as the outdoor temperatures drop, eat warm, cooked foods. Soups and stews prepared with root vegetables, whole grains, including oats and rice, and legumes provide grounded nourishment. Warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon and cloves enhance circulation while protecting against seasonal chills. Nuts and seeds add additional stability and energy.
