Helping the Nervous System Function Correctly

Sep 30, 2025 09:41AM ● By Lauren Brindisi, DC, DACNB

Dysautonomia is the term used to describe a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which regulates a large portion of the body’s functions that occur automatically, such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion and temperature control. A variety of symptoms can be felt when it is not working properly, including dizziness, fatigue, fainting, chronic pain, headaches, sweating, shakiness, breathlessness, nausea, vision issues, tachycardia and more.

There are many types of dysautonomia, but the most common are postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, orthostatic hypotension and neurocardiogenic or vasovagal syncope. Dysautonomia can develop after concussions, viruses, pregnancy, trauma and a variety of other conditions. Unfortunately, many patients are misdiagnosed for years before learning about dysautonomia.

In traditional medicine, medications are commonly prescribed to help regulate heart rate and blood pressure. Patients are also encouraged to increase fluid and salt intake, wear compression socks or participate in physical therapy and gradual exercise programs.

Functional neurologists have a different approach and focus on the concept of neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to change based on environmental, emotional and physical stimuli. They conduct a thorough assessment to pinpoint areas of the brain that are dysfunctional and the root cause of a patient’s symptoms.

Once test results are in, a customized treatment plan is created to restore normal autonomic nervous system function. The goal is to create positive changes in the brain, leaving patients with little to no symptoms and back to living a normal, healthy life.
