Charlotte's Dr. Heather Gentry Explains Misconceptions of Holistic Dentistry
One of the most common misconceptions about holistic dentistry is that practitioners don‘t practice conventional dentistry. Many patients assume that a holistic dental office avoids procedures like crowns, fillings or other restorative treatments. In reality, holistic dentists provide the same essential dental care, just in the healthiest way possible.
Holistic dentistry is not about replacing traditional treatments; it’s about enhancing them. Fillings and crowns are placed when needed, and biocompatible materials are carefully selected to minimize the body’s toxic burden. The philosophy behind holistic dentistry is recognition that the mouth is connected to the entire body, and what is placed in it matters.
Holistic practices also incorporate supportive therapies during procedures such as ozone and red-light therapy. Ozone helps reduce bacteria, supports enamel remineralization when the decay has not passed the dentin, and promotes healing. Red-light therapy can decrease inflammation and speed recovery. However, these therapies are adjuncts; they do not reverse cavities or replace necessary restorative work.
Additionally, holistic dentists focus on creating a cleaner clinical environment. They use air purifiers throughout their offices and follow the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) to minimize mercury exposure.
Holistic dentistry is simply conventional dentistry practiced with greater intention for both oral and whole-body health.
