Mecklenburg Solid Waste experts receive hundreds of residential waste disposal and recycling questions weekly. Their experts provide updates and answer some of the most frequently asked questions. In honor of Earth Day, Mecklenburg County Solid Waste will make it easy to recycle and repurpose items we don’t use anymore during Mecklenburg County Solid Waste’s annual Earth Day Take-Back event from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on April 18 at Compost Central.

Paper Shredding

Residents can shred up to three banker boxes of important documents and bills for free. Registration is required. Residents can sign up at WipeOutWaste.com. 

Electronics

Goodwill will accept electronics in working condition. From old phones to TVs and computers, residents can recycle and repurpose electronics they don’t use anymore. 

*Electronics in non-working condition can be dropped off during the event as well as at any full-service center during normal business hours.

Medical Devices

Assist ME N.C. will be back to collect certain medical devices. They are then repaired and given to people in need in our community. Acceptable medical devices include power and manual wheelchairs, upright walkers, scooters, knee scooters, hospital beds, tub transfer benches, shower chairs with a back, bedside commodes, grab bars for bathtubs, lift chairs and Hoyer lifts. 

Other Items

At any full-service center, residents can drop off food scraps; books; rechargeable/lithium-ion batteries; clothes, towels, sheets and shoes; clean wood furniture; and more. Visit WipeOutWaste.com for a complete list.

Recycling Right

There are only six items that can be recycled curbside: cans, cardboard, cartons, paper, glass bottles and jars, and plastic bottles and jugs with necks. Remember: When in doubt, throw it out.
