Shannon Binns’ path to founding Sustain Charlotte began with a simple realization: the way a city grows shapes the health of its people, neighborhoods and natural spaces. 

As Charlotte experienced rapid growth over the previous decades, Binns observed how decisions about transportation, development and land use were affecting everything from air and water quality to the loss of trees and open space. 

At the same time, he believed Charlotte had an opportunity to grow differently—to become a city where neighborhoods are walkable, residents have real transportation choices and nature remains part of daily life. 

In 2010, Binns founded Sustain Charlotte to help bring that vision to life by connecting residents, businesses, nonprofits and public officials to advance smarter solutions to growth. 

Today, as the parent of a young daughter, that work feels even more meaningful. The choices made now will shape the Charlotte she and future generations inherit.
