Eco Profiles 2026: Mecklenburg County Solid Waste
Jeff Smithberger, director of Mecklenburg Solid Waste, oversees solid waste processing, recycling programs, 9 recycling centers, two Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF), and one landfill. Since joining the County in 2014, he’s focused on reducing landfill waste while meeting the needs of residents and customers through expanded recycling options and community outreach.
Over the last 12 years, Smithberger and his team have broadened the list of accepted recyclable items in response to community demand, including textiles, white rigid foam, books, bikes, electronics, solar panels, food scraps, and, most recently, plastic bag and wrap. Mecklenburg County also processes yard waste collected from residents, turning it into high-quality mulch and compost, marketed locally as Queen City Compost™ (available to residents at a reduced cost).
Smithberger and his team work with residents, students, and local businesses to educate them on recycling right, community events, and other initiatives.
