Community Connection
Mar 31, 2026 11:07AM ● By Shannon Mc KenzieThe April “Earth Day” issue is one of my favorites each year, and recently I had an experience that brought its theme to life in a meaningful way. About a week ago, I met a yoga instructor who is relatively new to Charlotte. When I asked what brought him here, he shared that after traveling to numerous cities—mostly throughout the South—he found Charlotte to be unique in its commitment to sustainable growth. He knew this was where he wanted to be.
Having lived here for years and witnessed both the beauty and the rapid development—the trees, landscapes, and older homes giving way to expansion—it was refreshing to hear that perspective. While there is certainly more work to be done, it’s encouraging to recognize that there is a genuine will in our community to prioritize sustainability. The recent pause on the I-77 South Toll Lanes is one example of that collective voice in action, and I’m grateful to all who helped make it happen.
Natural Awakenings highlights local businesses and leaders who are committed to sustainable living in all its forms, especially our April edition. My hope is that you take the opportunity to connect with them—attend an event, participate in a workshop, schedule a consultation, or simply reach out with appreciation.
Wishing you a deeper connection to our community this April. Perhaps I’ll see you at an event.
Shannon
